Microbial Communities in Peruvian Acid Mine Drainages: Low-Abundance Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria With High Metabolic Activity

چکیده
We investigated the microbial community composition in three different mine tunnels from Hualgayoc (Cajamarca, Peru) and metabolic activity of acidophilic sulfate-reducing bacteria (aSRB) enriched acidic sediments mining tunnels. Microbial environmental samples was analyzed by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Metallibacterium Acidiphilium were found as most abundant PM1 PM2 sites, respectively, while Cyanobacteria PM3 site. Isosphaera Pseudomonas thrived water site well. Sulfate reduction at low pH then evaluated microcosm experiments showing even 3.4. Hydrogen favorable electron donor terms sulfate reducing rates (0.5 mM day?1 5.1) sulfide production (4.9 end experiment). Sequences affiliated to Desulfosporosinus Desulfovibrio hydrogen microcosms (60.3 17.8%, respectively). These sequences not detected sediments, but their occurrence suggests abundance studied AMD systems. Our results expand phyla environments contribute understanding aSRB for possibility applying these microorganisms bioremediation.

Quantification of Tinto River sediment microbial communities: importance of sulfate-reducing bacteria and their role in attenuating acid mine drainage.
Tinto River (Huelva, Spain) is a natural acidic rock drainage (ARD) environment produced by the bio-oxidation of metallic sulfides from the Iberian Pyritic Belt. This study quantified the abundance of diverse microbial populations inhabiting ARD-related sediments from two physicochemically contrasting sampling sites (SN and JL dams). Depth profiles of total cell numbers differed greatly between...
متن کاملBioremediation by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria of Acid Mine Drainage
Mining activity produces metal sulfide wastes particularly pyrite which remain in the mine long after operations cease. When water percolates through a mine where oxygen is present, a series of chemical reactions occur which produce extremely low pH and high concentrations of toxic sulfate and metal ions. This toxic leachate can cause severe aquatic habitat degradation downstream of the mine. T...

The dissolution of sulfide minerals such as pyrite (FeS2), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), and marcasite (FeS2) yields hot, sulfuric acid-rich solutions that contain high concentrations of toxic metals. In locations where access of oxidants to sulfide mineral surfaces is increased by mining, the resulting acid mine drainage (AMD) may contaminate surrounding ecosys...

Dissimilatory sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRB) are a very diverse group of anaerobic bacteria that are omnipresent in nature and play an imperative role in the global cycling of carbon and sulfur. In anoxic marine sediments sulfate reduction accounts for up to 50% of the entire organic mineralization in coastal and shelf ecosystems where sulfate diffuses several meters deep into the sediment....

Bioremediation strategies that depend on bacterial sulfate reduction for heavy metals remediation harness the reactivity of these metals with biogenic aqueous sulfide. Quantitative knowledge of the degree to which specific toxic metals are partitioned into various sulfide, oxide, or other phases is important for predicting the long-term mobility of these metals under environmental conditions. H...
